The Bontrager Velocis helmet is what I would consider an everyday wear helmet in the sense that it combines aerodynamics, breathability, safety, and lightweight in an all in one package. With helmets becoming more and more specific to performance and discipline, the Velocis is still my go-to helmet for cross country mountain bike racing. It also looks good when compared to many other helmets on the market.
What I like:
It weighs a mere 265 grams in size small. Although it may sound silly to be counting grams on a piece of equipment that is perhaps the most important (it protects your head), the lightweight Velocis is appreciated on my training rides lasting longer than 5 hours.
Mips! Is a relatively new technology and quickly becoming a standard across the board and It reduces rotational forces upon angle impacts. I’m sure it’s saved me as I had two nasty crashes last year in Australia and one where I definitely suffered a brain injury. Mips Explained Here.
It looks good and especially when featuring a custom paint job from Paint House Customs. It ticks all the boxes of being aerodynamic, breathable and ergonomically sound.
Crashes happen, and Bontrager’s one-year free crash replacement policy is pretty incredible. Read more about that here.
What could be improved:
After seeing this helmet as a prototype and wearing it nearly every day for about a year and a half now, I have to say; there isn’t much to be improved. Its reliable, the Boa retention system has worked flawlessly, and it’s stood the test time of time. Perhaps the only improvement could be in the front padding where it sometimes indents on my forehead, but that’s being pretty nit-picky.
